On 1st March, 1915, the 3rd King’s Royal Rifle Corps battalion of 80 Brigade, 27th Division, left their billets in Dickebusch near Ypres and moved to nearby trenches where they remained until relieved on 3rd March. During their first night there, the 4th King’s Royal Rifle Corps, also of 80 Brigade, moved forward with the specific aim of attacking and capturing the section of trenches opposite the Brigade line which they would then hand over to 3rd King’s Royal Rifle Corps. The attack was not a success. Many lives were lost and only a small portion of the enemy line was captured. This was handed over but when the enemy launched a counter attack the next morning they were driven out after having 10 men killed and another 20 wounded. One of those killed was Frederick King.
